Former first lady Jill Biden told MS NOW on Tuesday that she believes her husband, former President Joe Biden, would have won the 2024 election had he not dropped out of the race.
“I believe he would have beat Donald Trump in that election,” Jill Biden said during an interview with MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.”
The former first lady and longtime educator joined the show to discuss her memoir, “View from the East Wing,” which was published Tuesday.
The book includes the revelation that, contrary to what she said at the time, Jill Biden was frightened by her husband’s disastrous performance during a presidential debate with Trump in 2024, writing that she had been concerned he was having a stroke.
“I was scared to death to see that,” Jill Biden told MS NOW on Tuesday, adding, “Let’s face it, Joe knew that this was not a good performance.”
However, she said, doctors checked him out right after he got off stage. “We went on to do three more events that night, and Joe was like he always was. … To this day, it’s just inexplicable,” she continued.
Joe Biden was running for a second term against Trump at a time when Biden’s age and cognitive abilities were under immense public scrutiny. In his first debate with Trump on June 27 in Atlanta, he appeared confused and tired, giving low, garbled responses. He later blamed his poor debate performance on a cold and fatigue.
Her husband dropped his re-election campaign a month later, and then-Vice President Kamala Harris went on to become the Democratic presidential nominee.
Jill Biden’s book has sparked criticism from several former Biden administration aides, according to Axios. Aides told the outlet they felt that stories about the failed campaign are ill-timed, “selfish,” “disingenuous” and portray the former president and those closest to him as absolved of any blame or responsibility for losing the election.
“I would never want anyone I loved to go through that again,” Jill Biden told MS NOW on Tuesday when asked about her husband’s decision to withdraw his re-election bid. “It was so painful. Not just for us, not just for me and for Joe, but we have children and grandchildren. … To see them have to go through that was really a hard time for our family.”
