Walz: Minnesotans set ‘template’ for Trump resistance ahead of No Kings protests
March 28 2026, 08:00

As Americans across the country prepare to take to the streets on Saturday for a third No Kings protest, Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., told MS NOW’s Chris Hayes that he believes Minnesotans “provided the template” for pushing back on President Donald Trump’s overreach.

Walz said while the federal government’s Operation Metro Surge has officially ended, the people of Minneapolis are still reeling from federal forces’ monthslong occupation. Tensions between law enforcement and members of the community flared after immigration agents shot and killed two of the city’s residents, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, just weeks apart.

“I think Donald Trump, just like so many things, breaks it and moves on it,” Walz said. “You know, some of it’s buffoonish —Trump steaks, Trump University — but he sent the federal government, armed agents, in here, killed our citizens, did massive damage that will take years to recover from.”

The governor said Minnesotians “will never forget what happened” and emphasized the emotional toll the occupation has taken on so many in his state, including the children of immigrants who were targeted by the government, which he said is likely to cause “generational trauma.”

After Good and Pretti’s killings, residents came together and staged massive demonstrations. State officials have also sued the Trump administration over the federal government’s handling of the investigations into their deaths.

Walz told Hayes his state’s coordinated resistance to Trump’s crackdown “provided the template for pushing back on this guy.”

Walz said Saturday’s No Kings rallies will give Americans across the country the opportunity to follow the example set by the people of Minnesota, which is hosting the flagship rally, and tell the Trump administration, “Not on our watch.”

“Whatever your lane is in resistance, find that lane and be out there,” he said.
