President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will sign an emergency order to ensure Transportation Security Administration agents are paid, as the partial government shutdown disrupts federal operations and contributes to mounting chaos at airports nationwide.
“Because the Democrats have recklessly created a true National Crisis, I am using my authorities under the Law to protect our Great Country, as I always will do!” Trump said Thursday in a Truth Social post.
“Therefore, I am going to sign an Order instructing the Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, to immediately pay our TSA Agents in order to address this Emergency Situation, and to quickly stop the Democrat Chaos at the Airports.”
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have been locked in a standoff over federal spending, triggering the partial shutdown and leaving thousands of federal workers either furloughed or working without pay.
Lawmakers have clashed over immigration and border enforcement policies tied to Department of Homeland Security appropriations, preventing an agreement on a broader funding package. Democrats and Republicans have faced increasing pressure to reach a deal, especially as visible disruptions, including airport delays, begin to affect the public.
TSA agents, who screen millions of passengers daily, have historically been required to work even during funding lapses. Airports in cities including Atlanta, Chicago and New York have reported extended wait times and operational slowdowns, as some TSA officers have called out, worked reduced shifts or quit altogether.
Trump earlier this week ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to be deployed to major airports to help manage security lines and enforcement efforts during the ongoing government shutdown.
